Winter is Coming

For those in the market for a new home, the onset of winter may make the search take on a new urgency.

“Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand and for a talk beside the fire: it is the time for a home.” — Edith Sitwell

The more I looked for inspiration about winter online, the clearer it became that winter is a time of reflection. What else would be going on in a talk beside a fire, but the exchange of reflections on some topic. And the conversation can lead to further solitary reflection.

Winter we learn is the “spring of genius” and only in the depths of winter did Camus discover that within him lay an invincible summer.

So winter is a time for being inside and preparing in a different way.  In the fall, there is a lot of gathering going on. Its busy-ness of harvesting, chopping the wood, preparing for the snow, going on the hunt.  And then it’s all prepared and the light changes. Waking up in darkness. Staying up in darkness. Sitting by the fire. There’s a charm to it.

Live each season as it passes, resign yourself to the influence of the earth. — Thoreau

Winter doesn’t demand staying inside… quite the opposite the glistening powder at daybreak often calls for a conquering.

Nevertheless winter presents an opportunity to stay inside , by a fire, in the dark, with someone else or not and wonder if your own spring of genius is stirring, if the silence is your winter’s way of laying the groundwork for the invincible summer to come.

If you’re selling your home in the winter, show off your wood storage if you have a wood-burning fireplace. Decorate the mantle. These touches will help  buyers imagine the room as a great place to sit, relax, and reflect.
