Why I love the French language is a long story probably inspired by my parents’ experiences in France while my dad was studying Paul Ricouer.
Eventually I decided I wanted to learn Spanish and was having such a great time with that, realized I was missing out on not having taken French.
Plus I was studying philosophy as well, and French was essential to read a number of texts I wanted to. Once again, upon learning another language, I gravitated towards my favorite poems. In this case Victor Hugo’s Demain, des l’aube and Paul Eluard’s poem, Je t’aime.
Francis Cabrel’s Je L’aime a mourir
is almost as pretty as his song
Je t’aimais, je t’aime, je t’aimerai
and who can forget Carla Bruni’s hit quelqu’un m’a dit
In the early 2000s I was studying political science at Northwestern University. I was involved in the French Interdisciplinary Group which held casual academic talks about all thing France or francophone from across disciplines–philosophy, political science, history, comparative literature. I went for a summer study in Montpellier and later applied for a Chateaubriand scholarship to study in France at Sciences-Po. So in 2007-2009 I decamped to Paris for two years of the BNF, translation groups, and exploring Paris.
Now I live in the Roaring Fork Valley of Colorado, and I have found that French climbers enjoy the area for the climbing routes in wilderness locations near here.
Of course, skiiers and snowboarders are attracted to the terrain here as well.
Keller Williams is a great company for me to be with, because they also have offices in France.
If you’re in the Roaring Fork Valley and wanting to practice French you can use the Garfield County Libraries language learning program called Mango.
If you’re wanting to watch an amazing spy thriller television show where you can hear French speaking don’t miss Le Bureau.
Our countries have been interconnected since the Enlightenment, and Reformation! Since Rousseau suggest that the moral life entails giving laws to oneself, inspiring our simultaneous revolutions.
